BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The York College men's soccer team saw a hard-fought effort go to waste on Saturday, as they fell in two overtimes to Sarah Lawrence College by a score of 2-1.
With just 1:45 remaining in the second overtime, Colin Berg headed in a pass from Alix Legrand for the golden goal, giving Sarah Lawrence (1-2) its first win of the season.
The Cardinals forced overtime thanks to some last minute heroics of their own. In the 89th minute,
Eric Herrera bent a shot in the net off a corner kick to even up the score at 1-1.
Prior to that, Sarah Lawrence got the first goal of the match shortly after halftime with Legrand once again setting up the goal on a pass from midfield, which found Finn Macmillan, who chipped it over York keeper
Nigel Sampson.
Despite the loss, Sampson had a great match in goal, recording a career-high 14 saves. He also made a big stop in the second overtime, which at the time, seemed it would preserve a tie, only to see the Gryphons break through moments later.
With the loss, York drops to 0-4. The Cardinals will have a week to recover from the defeat and will return to action next Saturday when they host Bard College at 11 a.m. at Aviator Sports & Events Center.
