BRONX, N.Y.—Led by
Nicole Ovelheira and
Chyla Guevara, the York College softball team combined to score 25 runs over two games, but it was still not enough for a victory, as Lehman College defeated the Cardinals 17-9 and 25-16 in a pair of wild games.
Ovelheira went a combined 6-for-7 in the two games with two home runs and eight RBIs. Guevara collected four hits with a home run as well. However, the Cardinals could not contain the Lehman bats.
In game one, York looked poised to grab its first win of the season. An Ovelheira two-run homer to left field in the top of the 3rd gave York a 5-4 advantage.
Lehman retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but York responded with three more runs in the fourth to take an 8-5 advantage. Guevara doubled home two runs to start the scoring and Ovelheira followed with an RBI single.
However, some sloppy play by York in the bottom of the inning allowed Lehman to take the lead again. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Lehman bats exploded for seven hits and eight runs to put the game well out of reach.
Also chipping in for York in game one was
Shauneille Sinanan and
Alyssa King, who each had a pair of hits.
In game two, Ovelheira smacked a two-run homer to right center in the top of the first, but the lead would be short-lived. Lehman would put up huge innings in the first and second to take a commanding lead.
York made a bit of a comeback late, scoring four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. The fourth was highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Ovelheira and Guevara, while the fifth featured another RBI single by Ovelheira and a run-scoring single by Sinanan.
King had another nice game, collecting three hits, while Guevara finished with four runs and four RBIs. Sinanan finished with two hits and two runs and
Nathy Reyes had two hits.
York is 0-10, 0-4 CUNYAC. Lehman is 5-11. Tomorrow's game vs. Cobleskill has been cancelled due to the field being unplayable. York returns to action on Wednesday vs. Hunter College at Padavan-Preller Field.
