BROOKLYN, N.Y.-- The York College men's basketball team saw its playoff run come to an end on Saturday, losing to Brooklyn College, 72-62, in the quarterfinals of the City University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.
With the loss, the Cardinals' season comes to an end. They finish with a record of 11-16. Brooklyn advances into the semifinals on Tuesday night.
York had a balanced scoring attack in the loss with four players scoring in double figures.
Chad Coachman and
Rashaan Bailey each had 11 points, while
Ryan Smart and
Jean Joseph each had 10 points.
Anthony Mason finished with nine points and 15 rebounds.
York had no answer for Brooklyn's Jamel Gist, who scored 36 points on 11-of-20 shooting. Egzon Gjonbalaj and Lorenzo Williams each chipped in 14 points.
The Cardinals held an early 16-10 lead after a 6-0 run that was sparked by a
Ryan St. John three-pointer with 14:30 to go in the first half. But after York extended the lead to 22-15, Brooklyn exploded for a 19-2 run to go up 34-24 with 3:44 left in the opening half. The Bulldogs would eventually go into the locker room with a 12-point advantage.
In the second half, York clawed back into the game, cutting the deficit to just three points after a pair of Bailey free throws made it 46-43 with 13:48 to go. However, the Cardinals offense went cold from there, and the Bulldogs took advantage, extending their lead to 15 with 3:59 to go. From there, York was unable to muster a comeback in the final minutes.
