John Jay Pulls Away in 4th Quarter to Top York Women’s Basketball

JAMAICA, N.Y.-After three close quarters of play, John Jay College outscored the York College women's basketball team 19-9 in the fourth quarter and defeated the Cardinals by a score of 64-54 on Tuesday night.

After three quarters of solid play, the Cardinals fell apart, as they struggled to make shots from the field and the free throw line. The Cardinals trailed by just one point after the second and third quarters, and had been playing well all around up until the fourth.

John Jay's Terri Chu took advantage of the Cardinals' cold streak, making a pair of three pointers early in the fourth quarter that put the Bloodhounds up by seven points. Later, John Jay's Victoria Royal sealed the game with five straight points over two possessions to extend the lead to double digits.

York's Angelika Ruggiano finished with a team-high 16 points and four assists and Jigcara Grant-the nation's leading rebounder-pulled down 22 more rebounds. Samantha Bond chipped in 11 points and Claudia Rhoden and Sheahna Roscher had seven points off the bench.

Josephine Diaz had a game-high 18 points to lead John Jay and Chu finished with 15 points.

York is now 4-18, 2-12 CUNYAC. John Jay is 6-18, 3-12 CUNYAC. The Cardinals host Lehman College on Friday at 6 p.m.
