Comeback Falls Short As Men’s Basketball Loses to Medgar Evers by One

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team nearly erased a 14-point second half deficit, but saw its comeback fall one point short, losing to Medgar Evers College, 61-60, on the road Tuesday night.

York had four players score in double figures in the loss, led by Ryan Smart, who had 13 points, 15 boards and four blocks.  Sasha Clarida had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Chris Montefusco and Brett Walker each chipped in 11 points off the bench.  Larry Moore pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.

Joevanny Dambreville led the Cougars with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Maurice Swaby and Justin Sutton added 14 points.

The Cardinals trailed by 14 points with 17:22 to play, but they would turn it up from there. Jumpers by Walker and Ryan Smart cut the deficit down ten points.  Both teams exchanged buckets over the next few minutes until a Clarida three-pointer and a Walker free throw narrowed the deficit to just three points with 7:33 to go.

Medgar Evers pushed the lead back up to seven, but York responded with consecutive three's by Monteufusco and Walker to make it a one-point game (61-60) with 1:53 to go.

However, that would turn out to be the final points of the game.  The Cardinals never even got another shot off, as they turned it over twice in the final two minutes.  Meanwhile, Medgar Evers was able to run off a significant amount of clock after grabbing two big offensive rebounds on its next to last possession of the game.

The tough loss now drops York's record to 0-7, 0-3 CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers improves to 2-5, 1-1 CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will continue to look for their first win of the season when they travel to SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday at 2 p.m.
