JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team was defeated by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 74-44, in its final game before the holiday break on Saturday.
USMMA's Kaleigh D'arcy led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points and three assists, while Samantha Drake scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
York was led by
Evanda Redwood, who had 14 points and by
Giovana Rosado, who had 11.
Diamond Jackson registered six points and seven rebounds.
York played a strong defensive game, holding the Mariners to 38.7 percent shooting, but they were dominated in the rebounding battle by a margin of 58-31. This large discrepancy led to 23 second-chance points for USMMA. York also shot just 27.1 percent on the day.
The Cardinals came out slow both to start the game and after the half, as they were outscored 26-8 in the first quarter and 19-4 in the third quarter. York outscored the Mariners in the final quarter, 19-14.
With the loss, York is now 1-9, while USMMA wins its seventh straight and improves to 8-2.
The Cardinals will be off until December 30, when they host Old Westbury at 6 p.m.
