BUFFALO, N.Y. — The York men's basketball team fell to Villa Maria College on Friday, 101-76, in the first round of the Buffalo State Coles Classic.
York just could not keep up with Villa Maria's dominant shooting performance. Gerald Bibbs, who finished with 21 points (7-for-11), and Eric Waters with 27 points (11-for-12) led the Vikings to a 59.7% shooting percentage. On the other hand, the Cardinals struggled with their shooting, especially in the first half when they shot 36.8%. York improved significantly in the second half when they shot 57.5% from the field and 46% behind the arc, knocking down six three-pointers.
Villa Maria scored 27 points from York's 23 turnovers. The Vikings' were also able to penetrate the Cardinals' defense as they managed 18 fast break points. The Cardinals held the advantage over the Vikings in second chance points, 24 to 16.
Terrhon Vaughn led the Cardinals with 17 points, while
Ryan St. John added 12.
Ryan Smart finished with a game-high 14 rebounds, while
Larry Moore and
Chris Montefusco each finished with six.
Sasha Clarida came off the bench to score 15 points for York.
York will play in the consolation game on Saturday against Maine--Ft. Kent at 4 p.m.
