NEW YORK, N.Y. – Despite jumping out to an early lead, the York College Cardinals men's soccer team dropped a tough match to the Hunter College Hawks by a score of 6-2.
The early lead for York was provided in the ninth minute when freshman
Erik Bailon scored off a pass from
Eric Herrera.
York would hold the lead for 20 minutes until Hunter (7-5-1, 5-2 CUNYAC) would score the equalizer in the 29th minute on an unassisted goal from Jesus Patino Muniz. The Hawks would then jump out to a lead they would not look back from in the 31st minute, when sophomore Michael Merlo scored off an assist by Alex Zecena.
The Hawks then netted back-to-back penalty kick goals to make it 4-1. The first of the two goals would come in the 34th minute from Deklon Soodoo. The second would come from Alex Zecena in the 43rd minute to wrap up the first-half scoring.
Hunter would kick off the second half scoring early, as Soodoo would net his second of the afternoon in the 46th minute. York would draw within three goals of Hunter in the 59th minute on a score from Senior defenseman
Huguens Smith. The scoring would wrap up in the 81st minute on a goal from junior jorward Rafael Montoya.
Despite the loss, York keeper
Nigel Sampson made ten saves in goal.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 0-12-1, 0-5-1 CUNYAC. York will be back in action on the road on October 10 at 12:00 pm against The College at Old Westbury Panthers.
