JAMAICA, N.Y—The York College women's volleyball team could not recover from a slow start to SUNY Old Westbury and fell to the Panthers 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) on Wednesday night.
York got off to a very rocky start in both the first and second sets. In the opening set, York dropped the first 12 points before finally getting on the scoreboard, and in the second set, they fell behind 6-0 before scoring.
The Cardinals would get back in both sets thanks to late runs of their own. A 7-1 run and later, a 6-0 run made things interesting in the first set. In the second set, York closed to within three points (22-19) before Old Westbury pulled away.
The final set was close all the way to the end, but with the score tied at 23-23, Old Westbury scored the final two points to close out the match.
Old Westbury got the win thanks in large part to Marie McKenzie, who had five kills, five blocks and three aces.
York was led by
Shauncia McClendon and
Tiandra Jones, who each had six kills.
Chayana Jimenez had eight digs.
York drops to 2-18, while Old Westbury improves to 3-15. The Cardinals host Farmingdale State College on Friday at 7 p.m.
