NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team saw its comeback attempt fall a bit short in a 76-71 loss to the City College of New York on Friday night.
Trailing by as much as 15 points in the second half, the Cardinals rallied to cut the deficit to just 2 points in the final minute of the game, but could not get any closer and lost to the Beavers for the second time this season.
York had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by
Chad Coachman, who scored 18 points, to go along with eight rebounds and four assists.
Sasha Clarida had 13 points off the bench, while
Rashaan Bailey added 11 points and eight boards.
Ryan Smart finished with 10 points and eight boards.
CCNY's strong shooting played a big part in the victory, as they connected on nearly 50 percent of their shots. Mark Richards had a big night, scoring 22 points with eight rebounds to lead the Beavers.
The Cardinals looked strong early on, scoring the game's first six points, but they would lose the lead midway though the first half and never get it back. CCNY would go on a 10-0 run shortly after taking the lead to go up 28-16 with five minutes to go in the half.
In the second half, CCNY pushed its lead to 15 points following a David Solano three-pointer with 16:54 to go. York responded with a 9-0, with Coachman capping the run on a dunk to cut the deficit down to 46-40.
From there the Cardinals continued to fight to pull ahead, but CCNY continually fought off York runs. In the waning moments of the game,
Ryan St. John connected on a three to cut the deficit to 73-71 with just 13 ticks left. But CCNY got a quick bucket to go back up by two possessions and York could not get any closer.
The loss drops the Cardinals record to 6-13, 3-7 CUNYAC. CCNY is now 10-8, 5-5 CUNYAC. York will host Baruch College on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
