BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College men's soccer team lost a 2-1 thriller in overtime to Lehman College. With little time left in the first overtime period, Lehman's Brandond Melendez Ruiz bent a free kick to the far post and netted the match-winning goal.
The Cardinals got off to a hot start, scoring in the 8th minute. Senior
Rohan Burrell, who moved from defender to forward in this match, headed in a nice cross from midfield from teammate
Huguens Smith, to take a 1-0 lead.
Early on in the second half, Lehman broke through the Cardinals' defense with a breakaway score from Bijean Johnson, who was able to shoot one pass the diving body of goalie
Masamba Drame. The goal in the 58th minute evened the score, 1-1. York played an exceptional match, but could not hold on.
Burrell scored his first goal of the season for York. He now has nine career goals. Smith recorded his first point of the season with his assist. Drame had a solid night in goal, saving five shots.
The Cardinals will look to earn their first conference victory on the road against John Jay College, October 3 at 6:30 p.m.
