JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's volleyball team had their chances, but ultimately came up short, losing to St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-12) in a non-conference contest on Monday night.
Renee Daley finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs to lead York.
Mary Pamolarco added 11 digs and
Kiranjeet Kaur had a double-double as well, with 15 assists and 10 digs. She also served up four aces.
The Cardinals had no answer for St. Joseph's Lauren GaNun, who finished with 17 kills and no hitting errors, for a hitting percentage of .515. She also had a team-best 13 digs.
York looked strong early on in the opening set, taking a 6-3 lead after two straight Daley kills, and later, a 12-7 advantage following a
Kiranjeet Kaur ace. But St. Joseph's would come back to take the lead. They tied it at 15-15 following the longest rally of the set and then took the lead on the next point after a GaNun kill. The Lady Bears would then use the momentum to score four of the next five points to move ahead 20-16, propelling them to the opening-set victory. Daley had six kills in the first set but was outdone by GaNun, who recorded nine kills.
The Lady Bears won the second set thanks to a strong start that saw them take a 4-0 lead. York battled to tie the score at 11-11 after consecutive kills by
Tiandra Jones and
Shauncia McClendon but could never take the lead. St. Joseph's got some separation for good after three straight points made it 17-14. York got no closer than two points the rest of the set.
Looking for a spark in the third set, York coach
Renee Thompson switched up the lineup but the Cardinals could not respond. St. Joseph's jumped out to a 9-2 lead after some sloppy York play and never looked back.
York falls to 3-10, while St. Joseph's improves to 3-4. The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday with a road match at Old Westbury at 7:00 p.m.
