JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College women's volleyball team recorded their first win at home on their new floor. The Cardinals had a fantastic performance defeating Pratt Institute in four sets 25-14, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14.
The match began with close play until York jumped out to an 11-4 lead.
Renee Daley led the charge with aggressive presence at the net, combined with strong serves from
Tiandra Jones, who scored two aces. Daley tallied three kills in the first frame. Charlotte Burch from Pratt also scored three kills. York finished strong taking set one 25-14.
Pratt took an early lead in the second set, 7-6. Each squad dug in as three exciting rallies took place, making the score 8-8. Daley continued to shine, scoring four kills in dramatic fashion during the set. Shuancia McClendon also scored two powerful kills. Pratt battled back to make the set close, led by four kills from Hanna Calderwood. The Cardinals would eventually take the frame 25-20.
The third set once again started out close with a 6-6 tie after 12 points. Pratt upped their intensity, taking a lead later in the set, 17-14. Service errors hurt the Cardinals in the third frame as they narrowly missed closing out the game, losing the third set 25-22. Daley added another five kills to her already impressive match. Calderwood racked up four kills for the Canooneers, increasing her game total to nine.
Pratt carried their momentum through to the fourth set taking an early lead, 5-1. The Cardinals stayed tough and after a time-out eventually regaining the lead, as well as their momentum, taking a 20-9 advantage. McClendon was key in closing out the match with four kills late in the game.
York had an excellent match all around with offense coming from Daley and her 13 kills and McClendon with 12.
Kiranjeet Kaur was instrumental in the victory with 24 assists.
Mary Pamolarco kept the Cardinals alive on defense with 10 digs. The win brings York's record to 3-8 and they have an opportunity to tally another win Monday, September 28
th at 7:00 p.m. at home in the York College Gymnasium.
