York Women’s Volleyball Falls to Farmingdale in Three Closely Contested Sets

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College women's volleyball team lost in three tight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) against Farmingdale State College at home Wednesday night.  Despite the 3-0 score, each set was closely contested with positive performances from Renee Dailey and Shauncia McClendon.

Farmingdale came out strong in the first set, converting on the first 13 points with five kills coming from Katie Degraff.  However, York battled back with an 18-8 run.  Strong attacks from Renee Daley and Shauncia McClendon's four kills kept the Rams on their toes.  Farmingdale won the first set 25-18.

The Cardinals prevented Farmingdale from coming out with the same momentum in the second set, and after 14 points the game was 7-7.  York's fourth point ended in spectacular fashion with a spike from Renee Daley after a long rally.  Daley continued to show her offensive presence with four kills during the second frame. York lost a more closely contested set, 25-17.

In the third set, it was York coming out strong this time leading the first set 4-3 after seven points. Farmingdale quickly rallied with strong serves from Gina Giacalone, scoring 12 unanswered points.  The Cardinals kept the set close, going on a 9-0 run making the score 23-20.  Farmingdale closed out the set 25-20.

Despite the 3-0 loss, the Cardinals stayed close in each set.  Daley finished the match with nine kills and McClendon added six.  Nemesis Gallegos led York on defense with eight digs. Katie Degraff led the Rams with eight kills and a hitting percentage of .375. The York College women's volleyball team will take the court again Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Pratt Institute.
