BELLEROSE, N.Y. –– John Jay College powered past the Cardinals softball team by the scores of 17-2 and 12-3 at Padvan-Preller Field on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, John Jay (13-15, 5-5 CUNYAC) overpowered the Cardinals 17-2, jumping out to the early 14-0 lead. The Cardinals then were able to get on the scoreboard with two runs of their own in the bottom of third inning.
Alexis Mack would score on a John Jay error to make it 14-1.
Melanie Choy brought in
Karen Werner on a fielders choice, to make it 14-2.
John Jay would score three more runs in the top of fourth inning to round out the scoring.
For John Jay, pitcher Lisa Pellegrino (4-4) tossed three innings of relief to pick up the win and Nalena Cruzado was 3-for-4 in the game with three RBIs.
For the Cardinals,
Angelika Ruggiano was 2-for-3 in the game, while
Chyla Guevara and
Dessiris Gonzalez each had one hit for the game.
In the second game, John Jay no-hit the Cardinals for the victory, 12-3 in five innings. Catherine Alvarado (5-3) picked up the win, allowing three runs with three K's, en-route to no-hit bid.
John Jay did their damage in the first three innings, scoring the first 12 runs of the game, before the Cardinals got on the scoreboard.
The Cardinals managed to manufacture runs through eight walks issued out by John Jay's pitching.
Dessiris Gonzalez brought home
Alexis Mack on a ground out in the bottom of the third inning to make it 12-1.
Chyla Guevara drove in the third run of the game off a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 12-3.
Lisa Pellegrino's hitting led John Jay, going 1-for-2, with three RBIs and Danielle Minaya was 1-for-3, with two RBIs in the game.
York will try to bounce back next Saturday in an out-of-conference matchup against College of New Rochelle in a doubleheader. The games will be at Padavan-Preller Field at Bellerose, NY at 12:00 p.m.
