Softball Gets in Win Column with Sweep of New Rochelle

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—The York College softball team earned its first victories of the season on Tuesday night, sweeping the College of New Rochelle by scores of 13-5 and 15-4 at Flowers Park.

Captain Karen Werner sparked the Cardinals offense in game one, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs, while Melanie Choy went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the nightcap.  Werner was also the star on the rubber. She earned the victory in both games, allowing four earned runs and striking out five for the game-one win, while allowing just two earned runs and striking out eight.

The Cardinals jumped out to a big lead in game one, scoring five before New Rochelle came to bat.  York benefitted from some control problems by the CNR pitcher, scoring two runs in the frame on a bases-loaded walk.  The inning was capped off by a two-run double by Choy.

After York plated two more runs in the third, the Blue Angels got back in the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.  But York would put the game away in the top of the fourth, scoring four more runs.  The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Werner, which extended the Cardinal lead to 11-3.  They would add another run in the fifth and seventh innings.

In game two, York fell behind 3-1 after the first inning but broke out in a big way in the top of the second, scoring eight runs. Choy had a memorable inning, knocking home a run with a triple to open the scoring, then capping the scoring with a two-run single later in the inning.

York added three more runs in both the third and fourth inning, with most of the scoring caused by New Rochelle errors and walks.  Also contributing for York in the game-two win, was Melissa Janvier, who had two hits and Dessiris Gonzalez, who plated four runs.

York improves to 2-18, while New Rochelle is now 0-8.  The Cardinals have a quick turnaround, as they will visit the College at Old Westbury at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
