BRONX, N.Y. — The York College men's volleyball team dropped the first set against CUNYAC-rival Lehman College but dominated the next three sets to win 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-17) on the road Tuesday night.
York's usual suspects were at it again in the win. Sophomore standout
Randy Adams had one of his best matches of the season, recording 17 kills with just two errors for a hitting percentage of .517. He also added three aces and six digs. Senior
Edner Geffrard continued his second-half surge, finishing with 11 kills, 13 digs and two blocks.
Also chipping in for the Cardinals was
Anson Webb, who had six kills and recorded an incredible, 13 total blocks (4 solo, 9 assist).
Sebastien Francois had a good all-around match with five kills, 13 assists, five digs and four block assists.
Things did not start off well for York, as they struggle defensively in the opening set, allowing Lehman to hit .385 with 15 kills. But York would stifle the Lightning in the next three sets, holding them to hitting percentage of .111, -.161 and .182 respectively. Conversely, York was extremely efficient with the ball on their side of the court, hitting .429, .333 and .350 in the final three sets.
The win improves York's record to 14-16 overall and 12-4 in CUNYAC play. The 12 CUNYAC wins is a new school record. Lehman drops to 15-11 overall and 8-8 in CUNYAC play.
York will now close out the regular season with a pair of non-conference contests against The Sage Colleges and Vassar Colleges on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Those two matches could prove important for the Cardinals because in order to be eligible for an Eastern Conference Athletic Conference Postseason bid, York would need to have at least a .500 overall record.
News and Notes: Both Webb and Adams' performances today should help them in the national rankings. As of the last update, Adams was seventh in the nation in aces per set (0.57), while Webb was 11th in blocks per set (1.24).
York will officially host the CUNYAC Quarterfinal round next Tuesday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. That match will be aired on tape delay on Queens Public Television. If they win, they would move on to the semifinals at Hunter College on April 10. The finals will be later that evening and will be aired on ESPN 3.
