NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College men's volleyball team opened up City University of New York Athletic Conference Play on Saturday, earning a pair of victories. The Cardinals defeated Lehman College, 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-10) and later swept Medgar Evers 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-23).
York opened up with a hard-fought match early in the morning against the Lightning. After taking a 2-1 set lead, the Cardinals had to fight off a Lehman rally to earn the victory.
Randy Adams and
Edner Geffrard played a big role, each slamming 17 kills. Both also were big on defense, with Adams recording eight block assists and Geffrard finishing with 11 digs. Setter
Sebastien Francois tallied 42 assists. Freshman
Anson Webb also had a big all-around game, finishing with 9 kills, hitting. 500 and recording two solo blocks and eight block assists. Frehsman
Andrew Hass a team-best 12 digs.
In the second match, against Medgar Evers, the Cardinals had an easier go of things. Adams had another big match with eight kills, a .429 hitting percentage and five digs, and Webb had eight kills, a .385 hitting percentage and three total blocks. Freshman
Akeem George was perfect on the day, posting seven kills in seven attempts.
York (3-7, 2-0 CUNYAC) will be back in action on February 11 at Baruch College. It will be a tough test with the Cardinals falling to Baruch in the last two CUNYAC Championship matches.
