Men’s Basketball Can’t Contain CSI Offense in Loss

JAMAICA, N.Y.—The College of Staten Island put together an impressive offensive performance against the York College men's basketball team Friday night, defeating the Cardinals, 77-65, at the York College Gymnasium.

Staten Island (16-6, 10-3 CUNYAC) shot a season-high 60 percent from the field. They moved the ball well all night, setting up high-percentage shots throughout the game.  Frank Schettino was the catalyst, leading the Dolphins with 22 points, 7 assists and five three-pointers, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field. Will Fonseca finished with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting, adding 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

York (12-9, 7-5 CUNYAC) got 15 points from Tarson Pascal—a season-high for him. Ryan St. John added 14 points, making 4-of-7 from long range and Jaron Williams finished with seven points and eight rebounds.  The loss snapped York's three-game win streak.

The first half saw Schettino carry the Dolphins.  He scored the game's first eight points and finished the half with 17 points, which included four three-pointers.  His play helped CSI open up an early 11-4 advantage.  York got back in the game after consecutive three-point plays from Jaron Williams and Rashaan Bailey made it 16-12.   The Dolphins controlled the rest of the half from there, however.  A 7-0 run, sparked by an emphatic baseline dunk by Will Fonseca, put CSI up 38-22 with 3:04 in the half.  York closed the half with the last four points, cutting the lead to 38-26.

The second half opened with Staten Island going on a 10-3 run to take a 48-29 lead.  Later in the half, York tried to close the gap, getting six straight points—five of which came from Pascal— to close to 51-38.  However, CSI responded with a 13-6 run to take a 64-44 advantage. York never got back in the game from there.

Up next for York will be another tough test.  The Cardinals host Baruch College—who is undefeated in CUNYAC play—on Sunday at 4 p.m. It will be senior day for the Cardinals, with the five York seniors being honored.  In addition, there will be Applebee's gift cards given out, as well as the grand prize of a round trip JetBlue ticket.
