JAMAICA N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team played tough but lost in straight sets to # 1 Kean University, 3-0 (29-27, 25-16, 25-12).
This marks the third time that the Cardinals (5-12) matched up with a top-ten team this year. Kean (14-0) was coming into the match undefeated and with the new # 1 ranking in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll.
The Cardinals nearly took the first set thanks to 12 errors by the Cougars. The Cardinals were able to jump out to a 24-20 lead, due in large part to
Sebastien Francois (4) and
Anson Webb (2) combining for six kills. The Cougars were able to answer back with a run of their own with four straight points to tie it up at 24-24. After a 27-27 tie, a kill and ace by the Cougars' Bill Fischer put the set away.
The Cougars jumped out to 17-8 lead in the second set and never looked back, taking the second set 25-16 and third set, 25-12.
It was an extremely balanced attack for Kean, with four players recording at least five kills. Tommy Rosario led the Cougars with six kills and two digs and Shady Taylor added five kills and two digs. Ed Jedziniak had eight digs to lead all players.
Randy Adams finished with seven kills for the Cardinals and Francois chipped in with five kills. Also,
Andrew Hass had 15 assists on the night and
Edner Geffrard had three kills and six digs.
The Cardinals will be back in action hosting a doubleheader against the College of Staten Island and Eastern Mennonite University at home on Mar. 4 at 6 and 8 p.m. respectively.
