Women’s Basketball Ends Season With Loss to Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College women's basketball team saw the 2014-15 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon after losing to Brooklyn College, 68-54, in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC/ Army ROTC Women's Basketball Championships.

With the win, Brooklyn (19-6) advances to the semifinals on Tuesday where they will face the College of Staten Island.  For York, the season ends in the quarterfinals and its final record will stand at 7-18.

In the loss, York was led by Samantha Bond, who scored a team-high 14 points. Angelika Ruggiano and Tamika Taylor each chipped in 11 points. Stayce Kay Muirhead closed out her four-year career with a solid effort of seven points and ten rebounds and Shanelle Baldwin recorded nine points, seven rebounds and three assists of the bench.

Brooklyn was led by Megan Campbell, who scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds en route to being named the Player of the Game. Vanessa D'Ambrosi had 17 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

The game started off tight, with York holding an early advantage before Brooklyn pulled ahead by five points.  But midway through the half, a 10-0 Brooklyn run, sparked by seven points from Campbell put the Bulldogs up 25-10 with 11:04 left before halftime.  Brooklyn would then push the lead to as many as 23 points in the half, until a late York run cut the deficit to 14 at the break.

Despite the strong finish to the half, York could not build off that momentum and never got within single digits in the second half.  Brooklyn pushed the lead back up past 20 midway through the second half and never looked back from there.

The Cardinals were done in by many of the ills that plagued them throughout the season.  They were out-rebounded 68-54, which resulted in 17 second-chance points for Brooklyn.  The Cardinals also struggled from the free throw line, making just 57 percent of their shots from the charity stripe.

With the season now over, York will look to build off an improved season in which they won four more games than the previous year.
