York Women’s Basketball Edged By John Jay

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team played a hard-fought game at John Jay College Tuesday night, but came up a bit short, losing 50-48.

In the loss, York (7-15, 4-10 CUNYAC) was led by Angelika Ruggiano, who had 15 points and by Samantha Bond, who scored 11. Tamika Taylor had seven points, five assists and ten rebounds, while Stayce Kay Muirhead grabbed eight rebounds.  Those eight rebounds give Muirhead a career total of 967, as she attempts to reach 1,000 before the end of the season.  York has at least three more games, which would mean she would need to average 11 rebounds over those three games to get there.

John Jay (6-16, 5-10 CUNYAC) got a big game from Victoria Royal, who scored 12 points and grabbed 25 rebounds.  Brianna Cunningham added 16 points and 17 rebounds.

The game was a tight throughout with the largest lead by either team being seven points.  The Bloodhounds were in the lead for most of the game, and held that seven-point advantage with 7:14 to go.  But a 9-2 York run tied the score at 45-45.  A three-point play by Shanelle Baldwin and a jumper by Bond helped spark the run.

After John Jay got a bucket from Victoria Royal on the next possesion to go back up by two with 3:32 to go, the two teams went on a scoreless drought for more than two minutes.  York finally broke through with a three-pointer from Bond to take a one-point lead with just 1:18 to play.  A John Jay free throw would eventually tie the game, and the Cardinals had a chance to go ahead on the ensuing possesion.  However, Nia Rene missed a three-pointer and John Jay got the rebound with 25 seconds left.

After a timeout, Cunningham made a lay-up to put John Jay on top 50-48.  With just 13 seconds remaining, York brought the ball up court and Ruggiano took a jump shot just before the buzzer, but was off the mark, giving John Jay the victory.

Up next for York is Lehman College on Friday.  The Cardinals will head to the Bronx for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
