BRONX, N.Y. – The York women's basketball took to the court Tuesday night on the road against Lehman College. Although York kept it close for most of the game, Lehman pulled away late and ultimately ran away with the win by a final score of 76-48.
York started slow the first three minutes of the game, turning the ball over three times. However, seniors
Angelika Ruggiano and
Samantha Bond were able to provide the Cardinals a spark. In fact, York took a three-point lead with four minutes to go after
Sheahna Roscher's layup. Unfortunately, York could not keep the momentum, as Lehman went on an 8-2 to finish the first quarter.
Similar to the first quarter, York kept chipping away in the second quarter. The Cardinals got the score within two after Ruggiano and Bond hit four free-throws. Despite the effort, Lehman's offense would not falter, going on a 10-2 run to close the half, 31-23.
Bond led the charge for York, scoring 12 points in the first half. Lehman utilized an evenly spread offense with many of their starters scoring points including a 13-point showing from Amely Del Rosario.
The Cardinals brought it within seven midway through the third quarter, however Lehman brought the deficit back up to double digits. Del Rosario dominated in the third quarter, scoring 13 points on 6-of-8 from the field. Her stellar play gave the Lightning a 14-point lead going into the final quarter.
York could not make a comeback in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 23-9.
Del Rosario led the Lighting with 31 points and six assists.
Bond tallied 14 points for the Cardinals and added three assists. Both Ruggiano and
Jigcara Grant had solid nights for York scoring 13, and 11 points respectively. Grant also performed well on the boards grabbing an impressive 23 rebounds.
The York women fall to 2-7,1-2 CUNYAC while Lehman improves to 5-3, 3-0 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will play again Friday night against Baruch College on the road at 5:30 p.m.
