BOX SCORE Bayamón, P.R.— Despite a game-high 22 points from
Ryan Smart, the York College men's basketball team came up a bit short, losing to Augsburg College in the second game of its trip to Puerto Rico.
Smart shot 50 percent from the field and secured nine rebounds.
Anthony Mason chipped in 11 points and
Sasha Clarida added nine points off the bench.
Augsburg College, which made the trip from Minnesota, was led by Colin Olmscheied (17 points) and Brett Rasmussen (13 points).
York looked like the stronger team early on, as they scored the game's first nine points and held Augsburg without a point until the 13:26 mark of the first half.
However, York's offense went cold after the opening 9-0 run, and they did not score a point for seven minutes. This allowed Augsburg to score the next 14 points—which were mostly on free throws. From there the two teams were even the rest of the half, with the Auggies taking a 24-19 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Auggies pushed the lead to 30-20 early on and looked like they might pull away. However, York's defense created some turnovers and Smart got hot, draining a pair of three's and a jumper to put York up 34-33 with ten minutes to play.
The two teams went back and forth from there, until Augsburg got a pair of big three's from Rasmussen, with under four minutes to play, and Ryan Gilmer with just over two minutes to play. The latter gave Augsburg a 51-44 advantage.
York briefly cut it back to down to one possession in the final moments of the game, but the Auggies made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Augsburg improves to 6-3, while York drops to 2-10. York will now be idle for Christmas break and return to action on January 5 vs. Brooklyn College.
