Cardinals Fall to Carthage at Puerto Rico Clasico

Bayamón, P.R.— The York College men's basketball team struggled in the first of two games held in Bayamón, Puerto Rico Sunday night, falling to Carthage College 61-32.

The Cardinals were never really in this game, which was played in the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamón, Puerto Rico,  just outside of San Juan.

A 12-0 run by Carthage in the early parts of the game, gave the Red Men a 16-4 lead they would never relinquish. York briefly got within nine points shortly after, only to see Cartage go on a late run at the end of the half, pushing the advantage to 31-14 at the break.

Things did not fair any better in the second half, as Carthage opened up with back-to-back three-pointers to go up by 23 points.  They extended the lead to as many as 38 points in the second half before York closed the gap slightly at the end.

York struggled to get open looks all night and took plenty of forced shots, resulting in just a 34.2 percent shooting percentage.  Carthage, meanwhile, was efficient on offense, shooting 56.4 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from long range.

Carthage (5-4) was led by Tony Pierce, Jr., who scored 16 points in his season debut.  Jordan Kedrowski added 15 points and was 3-of-3 from three-point range.

York (2-9) got a team-high nine points from Ryan Smart, while Rashaan Bailey chipped in six points.

The Cardinals will wrap up their Puerto Rico trip tomorrow when they take on Augsburg College at 3 p.m. EST/ 4 p.m. AST.  Streaming video is available for the game.
