York Women’s Basketball Falters After Strong Second Half from U.S.M.M.A.

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York women's basketball team faced off against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Monday night on the road.  The teams were evenly matched in all aspects, however USMMA pulled out the win, 64-55, with a strong second half.

The Cardinals set the pace early with seniors Angelika Ruggiano and Shanelle Baldwin each scoring nine points in the first half.  Both seniors continue to be impact players during the 2015-16 campaign.  Rachel Wehlburg kept the Mariners alive in the first half scoring ten points.  The Mariner's bench contributed significantly throughout the game and was a key factor in their victory.

The Cardinals entered the second half with a 33-31 lead.  Kelsey Hofmann, who was quiet in the first half for the Mariners came alive, scoring ten points.  USMMA finished the third quarter with a six-point lead and would not relinquish it for the duration of the contest.  The game finished with a final score of 64-55.  Despite the loss, the Cardinals produced a well-rounded offensive attack.  Samantha Bond led York in scoring with 14 points, followed by Baldwin with 13--Jigcara Grant and Ruggiano both finished with 11 points. Grant was able to pull down an impressive 14 rebounds.  Tichia Carmon led the Mariners with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The loss brings York's record to 2-5 (1-0 CUNYAC) on the Season, while USMMA improves to 2-0.  The Cardinals will have a chance to regroup on Friday night at home at 6:00 p.m. against conference opponent The City College of New York.
