JERSEY CITY, N.J..— The York College men's basketball team lost a tight game to New Jersey City University on Monday night by a score of 74-70.
The Cardinals shot well all night (48.3 percent) and were even in the rebounding department, but they were done in by 25 turnovers, which led to 21 points for NJCU.
York got 16 points from
Ryan St. John, who connected on four shots from three-point range.
Rashaan Bailey added 15 points to go along with seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Anthony Mason chipped in 10 points.
NJCU got a big game from Jalen Harris, who had 23 points, and from Chinwe Wosu, who scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
York got off to a fast start thanks to a 12-0 run in the first half, which put them ahead 20-10 with 9:31 remaining.
Ryan St. John scored eight points in the stretch.
Following an NJCU timeout, the Gothic Knights regrouped and slowly cut into the lead, eventually evening the score at 28-28 on a Wosu lay-up with 2:52 to go before halftime. At the break, York led 35-32.
The two teams then went back and forth in the second half and the game wouldn't be decided until the final minute. With just under three minutes to play and NJCU up by one, the Gothic Knight defense stopped York on four straight possessions. NJCU extended its lead to six points, thanks to strong free throw shooting and led 72-66 with 44 ticks left. From there, York could not recover.
The loss drops York's record to 2-5, while NJCU improves to 3-2. York returns to action on Friday with a home game against CCNY at 8 p.m.
