JAMAICA, N.Y.— York College Head Coach
Ronald James earned his first career victory Wednesday night, as the Cardinals defeated Yeshiva University, 68-54, in their home opener.
James dropped his first two games of his York coaching career but got a convincing victory against the Maccabees tonight.
Seniors
Angelika Ruggiano and
Samantha Bond led York on the night with 21 and 16 points respectively. Senior
Jigcara Grant had another big night on the glass, pulling down 20 rebounds and adding six points. She's now averaging 18.7 rebounds per game through three contests.
Yeshiva (0-1) was led by Michal Alge, who had 16 points and 17 boards.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair. The two teams exchanged leads 10 times. Yeshiva ended the first quarter with a three-pointer by Rachel Mirsky at the buzzer to go up 12-9. In the second quarter, the two teams continued to exchange leads, until a three by Ruggiano put York up 22-18. A lay-up by
Juliet Matthews just before halftime put York up by five at the break.
The Cardinals put the game away early in the second half. A Ruggiano three with 5:55 left in the third quarter put York up 37-25, and later, a Bond three-ball put the Cardinals up by 20 points (51-31) at the end of the third quarter. The Cardinals then cruised in the fourth quarter for the win.
York (1-2) returns to action on Friday with another home game. They'll host Nazareth College at 5 p.m.
