JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team used stifling defense to defeat the Hunter College Hawks, 64-51, in CUNY Athletic Conference action at the York College Gymnasium Friday night.
The Cardinals (9-4, 4-2 CUNYAC) were without their top two scorers tonight, but they made up for it with great defense and contributions from nearly everyone on the roster. York held Hunter to just 32.8 percent shooting—the lowest for an opponent this season. They also frustrated the Hawks with 15 offensive rebounds, which led to 17 second-chance points.
York was led by
Jaron Williams, who finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.
Du'Quan Lawson netted ten points with five assists, while
James Wolf had seven points and seven rebounds.
Devonnie Edwards had 12 points and
Taron Pascal chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Hunter was led by Brian Kruger, who had a game-high 15 points. The Hawks drop to 6-7, 3-3 CUNYAC.
Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start offensively. But York began to pull away midway through the opening half, thanks to a 9-0 run that pushed its lead to 11 points. The Hawks could just not break the Cardinals defense from there, as they scored just four points over the final ten minutes of the first half, going into the locker room with just 12 points.
The game was never in doubt in the second half, as York quickly scored the first six points and took a 31-12 advantage. From there, Hunter never got closer than 13 points.
The Cardinals will look to build off the impressive victory when they return to action on Wednesday with a crucial CUNYAC game on the road against the College of Staten Island. It will be York's first meeting with the Dolphins since they met in last year's CUNYAC Championship. The Dolphins will be hoping for some revenge, as York defeated CSI to win the 2014 CUNYAC title.
