York Women’s Basketball Falls to Brooklyn in First Game of 2015

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team returned to action after winter break on Tuesday, falling to CUNY Athletic Conference rival Brooklyn College by a score of 75-54.

In the loss, York (3-8, 2-3 CUNYAC) had three players score in double figures--led by Angelika Ruggiano, who had 16 points.  Samantha Bond chipped in 13 points and Tamika Taylor recorded 11 points and eight rebounds.

Reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week Megan Campbell led all players with 20 points, while also registering eight boards, two blocks and three steals to lead Brooklyn (8-3, 6-0 CUNYAC).  Vanessa D'Ambrosi added nine points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Despite the lopsided final score, York kept it close for the first half.  The Cardinals trailed by just two points, 15-13, following a Taylor made jumper at the 9:41 mark of the first half.  However, a 21-9 run over a seven-minute span stretched Brooklyn's lead to 14 points, 36-22, with 2:39 left in the opening half.  The Cardinals closed the half with six unanswered points to close the gap at halftime to just eight points (36-28).

The second half started with a 7-0 run, capped off by a Karen Mak three-pointer, that quickly put the Bulldogs up by 15 points (43-28) with 17:09 remaining.  Brooklyn would then push the lead to 22 points following a 15-8 stretch that ended with a Chrissy Heyer three-pointer.  The Cardinals managed to cut the deficit to 12 briefly, before Brooklyn pushed it back up to 21 points at the final buzzer.

York won the turnover battle and shot better from the free throw line, but Brooklyn was much more efficient from the field, particularly from three-point range, where they connected on 62.5 percent of their shots (5-for-8).  York was also badly out-rebounded, pulling down just 29 boards to 48 for Brooklyn.  That discrepancy resulted in 16 second-chance points for the Bulldogs.

York will hope for a better result next time when they host Hunter College on Friday at 6 p.m.
