JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team outscored the City College of New York by 14 points in the second half, en route to a come-from-behind, 69-59, victory over the Beavers on Friday night.
York's
Samantha Bond had a big night to lead the Cardinals, scoring 24 points—two shy of her career high—and
Tamika Taylor filled up the stat sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Angelika Ruggiano chipped in 14 points, while
Shauncia McClendon contributed off the bench with eight points and nine boards.
Stayce Kay Muirhead grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds. York (6-11, 4-6 CUNYAC) has now won its last two CUNYAC contests and moves up into fifth place in the conference standings.
CCNY (4-14, 2-8 CUNYAC) was led by Tiara Brown (17 points, 16 rebounds, four assists) and Marissa Olsen (11 points, six assists).
The Beavers came out of the gates shooting well, connecting on 9-of-18 shots through the first nine minutes of action—taking an early 20-16 advantage. Shortly after, consecutive three-pointers by Liz Durchalter put CCNY up 29-21 with 8:31 left in the half. But the Beavers shooting cooled from there, scoring just seven points the rest of the half. York would cut the deficit to four points (36-32) just before halftime, thanks to a lay-up from McClendon, which was set up off a pretty pass from Taylor.
CCNY came out strong to start the second half as well. After York scored the opening bucket, the Beavers scored seven straight points to go up 43-34. However, from there it was all York the rest of the way. A 10-2 York run, capped off by a Taylor put-back and three-pointer on consecutive possessions cut the deficit to just one point (45-44) with 12:30 to play.
York would then take the lead a few minutes later—its first since the opening bucket of the game—thanks to another Taylor jumper, which made the score 51-49. With the momentum on its side, York responded with seven more unanswered points to go up 58-51. A Bond three-pointer and baskets by Ruggiano and McCledon accounted for the seven points.
CCNY could not recover from there, as it shot just 30.6 percent and managed just 23 points in the second half.
Next up for York is a non-conference contest against the College of New Rochelle at home on Monday at 7 p.m. Admission to the game is free, but if you can't make it
