Women’s Basketball Escapes with Win Over USMMA

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team got out to a big first-half lead and then held off a late rally by the United States Merchant Marine Academy to win by score of 61-59 in a non-conference contest at home Monday night.

York jumped out a 13-point advantage in the first half thanks a 12-0 run that spanned nearly seven minutes, giving the Cardinals a 28-15 advantage with 2:42 left in the opening half.  Five different players scored for the Cardinals during the stretch.  York would eventually go into the locker room with a 33-22 advantage.

After halftime, USMMA came out hot, opening the second half with a three-point play from Sara Ellenberger, a three-pointer by Demi VanDerWal and another bucket from Ellenberger to quickly cut the deficit to just three points.

York pushed the lead back up to seven with two straight buckets immediately following the 8-0, USMMA run.  From there, York held a narrow lead until two straight baskets form USMMA's Jenna Wetherington tied the score at 53-53.  Moments later, the Mariners took a 56-55 advantage— its first lead since early in the first half.

But York would not be denied down the stretch.  The Cardinals battled to tie the score at 57-57 with 50 seconds remaining.  On the next possession, Tamika Taylor dribbled up court and through the lane, hitting a lay-up to make it 59-57 with just 36 ticks left.  The Cardinals then forced a turnover with 19 seconds remaining, which forced USMMA to foul.  Angelika Ruggiano drained both shots to put York up by four points.  USMMA would score with just one second remaining, but York got the ensuing in bounds pass in with no problems and ran out the clock.

In the victory, York (4-9) was led by Taylor, who had a game-high 20 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists.  Ruggiano had 13 points, while Stayce Kay Muirhead had eight points and eight boards.

USMMA (2-10) got 15 points from VanDerWal and 12 points and 13 rebounds from Tichina Carmon.

York will visit the College of Staten Island next on Wednesday on the road at 5:30 p.m.
