USMMA Powers its Way to Win over York Women’s Volleyball

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, NY— The United States Merchant Marine Academy slammed down 43 kills en route to defeating the York College women's volleyball team 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) on Thursday night at the York College Gymnasium.

The Mariners featured a number of big hitters, led by Jennifer Perkins, who recorded a match-high 14 kills with a .647 hitting percentage, and Michelle Danhof with nine kills.  As a team, they hit .247 on the evening.

USMMA came out strong from the onset, as a 10-3 run gave them a 13-6 advantage in the opening set.  They continued to extend that lead and took the opening set by a comfortable margin.

The Cardinals played the Mariners tough in the final two sets though.  The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in the second set and held that advantage until USMMA fought back to take a 17-16 lead.  From there, the Mariners would score five of the next seven points to pull away.

In the final set, York also had an early advantage taking a 3-2 lead after the first five points.  But USMMA took the lead back at 5-4 and never relinquished it again.

The Cardinals were led by Stayce Kay Muirhead, who finished with a team-high five kills and six blocks (two solo).  Shauncia McClendon hit .444 with four kills and two blocks, and NaaDira Patrick added five block assists.  Allison Li led the Cardinals on defense with seven digs.

The win improves USMMA's record to a perfect, 7-0 on the season, while York is still in search of its first win at 0-5.  The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday with a pair of conference match-ups.  The Cardinals will battle Hunter College at 3 p.m. and Medgar Evers College at 5 p.m.  The multi-match will be held at Lehman College.
