BOX SCORE 2 BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York College softball team picked up a surprise victory over conference-foe Baruch College, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon, before falling in game two by a score of 6-2. The Cardinals had never defeated Baruch College since their inception in 2003, but the Cardinals finally broke through with a victory in game one.
The win was due in large part to the pitching of
Priscilla Lallave, who allowed three earned runs over seven innings, while striking out six. York also benefitted from some sloppy play by the Bearcats in the field. Baruch committed eight errors in the field, which accounted for five of the six York runs.
Baruch opened the scoring in the top of the third with an RBI ground out before
Geneva Faulk evened up the score in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single.
The bottom of the fourth was the turning point of the game for York. With two outs,
Michelle Deleon struck out on a ball in the dirt. But the throw by the Baruch catcher was wild, allowing Deleon to reach and
Angelika Ruggiano to score from second. On the next play,
Karen Werner hit a deep fly ball that was dropped in left field, which brought home another run and allowed Werner to advance all the way to third. A infield hit by
Chyla Guevara—who went 3-for-3 on the day— brought home another run, to make it 4-1.
York would score two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and those two runs would prove to be crucial. In the top of the seventh, Baruch scored three runs and brought the tying run to the plate. But Lallave was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
In game two, York got off to a rough start, when Deleon struggled with her control on the mound. She walked home three runs in the top of the first. Lallave replaced her after just 2/3 of an inning and was able to escape further trouble. Baruch would add a run in the third and two in the fourth though against Lallave.
York got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double by
Thessaly Belizario. The Cardinals then had their chances to tie the game in the next two innings but came up short. York loaded the bases in the fifth, but Baruch pitcher Olivia Auman caught Belizario looking to end the inning. The Cardinals also put two runners on in the sixth but failed to bring home a run.
With the split, York is now 4-9, 1-3 CUNYAC, while Baruch is 1-7, 1-3 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will visit John Jay College on Wednesday.
