BOX SCORE 2 BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York College softball team broke out of its offensive slump on Saturday afternoon, as they combined to score 28 runs in doubleheader sweep of Sarah Lawrence College. York won game one, 16-3, and picked up a 12-4 victory in game two.
Game One RecapThe Cardinals tallied 16 hits despite just batting in four innings, after the game ended with the five-inning mercy rule. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit, with five batters collecting multiple hits.
Leading the way for York was
Geneva Faulk, who went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBIs.
Michelle Deleon was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs.
Thessaly Belizario,
Priscilla Lallave and
Karen Werner each had two hits apiece.
Lallave also earned the win on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out three, while allowing just two unearned runs.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, York quickly took the lead in the bottom of the frame. A two-run single by
Chyla Guevara highlighted a three-run top of the first. After plating a run in the second inning, the Cardinals exploded for five more in the third and seven in the fourth.
In the third, York started the inning with three straight hits, which included an RBI double by Belizario. A sac fly by
Danielle Dunn and then run-scoring hits by
Angelika Ruggiano, Deleon and Werner followed.
The fourth inning saw four errors by Sarah Lawrence help open the floodgates to a big inning. RBI doubles by Belizario and Faulk were the big knocks in the frame.
Game Two RecapThe Cardinals took the early lead in game two, jumping out a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second. Dunn doubled home the game's first run and Ruggiano brought Dunn home with a single up the middle.
The Gryphons would respond with a four-run frame in the top of the third. A couple of big errors helped set up the inning. All four runs were unearned against Deleon, who got the start in game two.
Sarah Lawrence's lead would be short-lived though, as York scored seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Werner started off the inning by working a walk and then stealing second and third, and then stealing home on a double steal. Faulk followed with a triple and then Dunn singled her home. After an error and an RBI ground out brought home two more runs, Werner came back up to the plate and capped off the inning with a two-run single.
York would plate three more in the fourth to push its lead to eight and then held Sarah Lawrence scoreless in the fifth to clinch the victory.
Dunn led York at the plate in game two, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs.
Eliana Moronta was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Deleon earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-2. She scattered six hits and struck out five.
York improves to 3-8, while Sarah Lawrence drops to 0-10. The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday with a home doubleheader against Baruch College.
