RESULTSJAMAICA, N.Y.- York men's tennis bounced back from their disappointing CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) quarterfinal loss to Hunter College by defeating St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) yesterday in a rescheduled match from earlier in the regular season. York was able to beat the Bears of St. Joe's by a score of 5-4.
While most teams that both make the playoffs and win their final game of the year in any sport are crowned champions- this was not the case for York. The match was played to complete the scheduled slate of games from the 2014 season that was and also give some quality CUNYAC tennis players some valuable experience moving into next season.
The win gave York their fifth win of the season and a boatload of confidence and hopes for next season. With three graduating seniors, York will rely heavily on up-and-coming stars
Haseeb Raza and
Hasnain Khatri to propel them to new heights in the 2014-15 campaign. Both men played extremely well yesterday against St. Joseph's- they each won their singles match, then teamed up to win their doubles match against Jeff Bonowicz and Kevin Calcedo.
Another high note from yesterday's match was graduating senior
Anthony Omoragbon winning his final singles match of his collegiate career at the York College courts. He was able to defeat the Bear's Kyle Johnson in thrilling fashion, edging him 10-9. He teamed up with fellow senior
Elnathan Atwell in the 2nd doubles competition of the day. However they came up short to Johnson and Nolan Parr by a score of 8-2.
As one of York's rebuilding teams- men's tennis will look grow on their experiences from the 2014 season that was and look to improve upon their win total of five they have been stuck at the last couple of seasons. The Cardinals haven't won more than five games since the 2007 season where they went 6-3.
Head coach
Greg Jackson and his players will hope the momentum from a close win yesterday can carry over to next season. He and his club finish the year with a 5-10 record (1-6 CUNYAC), while the Bears of St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) fall to 0-10. Their season continues with a match tonight against Webb Institute at 7:00.
