Faulk Sets New Single-Season School Record for Batting Average, Triples, Slugging and On-Base Percentage in Blowout Victories

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.- The York College softball team closed out the 2014 season in dominating fashion, defeating the College of New Rochelle, 20-2 and 21-0, in a pair of games on the road Friday night.   In addition, senior Geneva Faulk capped off the season by establishing new school single-season records in several offensive categories.

The Cardinals finished the 2014 season with a disappointing record of 7-21 but were able to finish off the season on a high note with the two lopsided victories.  York banged out 20 hits in game one and added another 18 in the nightcap.  The 20 hits in game one and the 21 runs in game two were both season highs.

Every player recorded at least one hit in both games.  Karen Werner, Michelle Deleon and Thessaly Belizario had the most Cardinal hits, collecting a combined six hits each.  Deleon and Belizario were each 4-for-4 in game one and added two hits apiece in game two.  Werner had three hits in both games and created havoc on the base paths, swiping four bags on the afternoon.   Belizario and Deleon also drove in a combined seven runs apiece, including five from Belizario in game one.  In game two, Angelika Ruggiano had a five-RBI game of her own, as she went 4-for-4 with a triple, while also scoring three runs in game two.

On the mound, Priscilla Lallave earned her third victory of the season in game one, going five innings, while striking out seven and allowing two earned runs.  Deleon got her fourth win on the year, as she struck out five and allowed just two hits over fiving innings in game two.

New Rochelle pitchers Amber Milan, Jah-Leah Ellis and Tanika Charles did not make things any easier on themselves.  Milan issued nine walks in game one, while Charles and Ellis combined to walk nine in the second game.   It is been a struggle for the Blue Angels all year, as the two losses drop their record to 0-23.

As a team, York scored in every inning of both games, highlighted by an eight-run frame in the top of the first of game two and two six-run innings in the second and third innings of game one.

The offensive outburst also helped a number of Cardinals finish the season with a batting average over .300.  Four Cardinals who were under .300 coming into the afternoon, went over the coveted mark with big performances.  Belizario went 6-for-8 on the day and pushed her average to .350 on the season.  Ruggiano finishes the season hitting at a .333 clip after her 5-for-7 day, while Werner ended at .321, after going 6-for-8.  Chyla Guevara went 3-for-9, making her average exactly .300 for the season, while Deleon was just shy of the mark at .299.

Geneva Faulk was already over .300 entering the game and her three hits in three at-bats gave her a team-leading .357 batting average.  That .357 average gives her the new school single-season mark for highest batting average in the 12-year history of York College softball.  She also set a new school record for on-base percentage (.477), slugging percentage (.586) and triples (4).  Deleon also established a new school record with ten doubles.

The previous records were .356 for batting average (Brittany Patalano, 2010), .458 for on-base percentage (Joviette Frederick, 2010), .519 for slugging (Shanay Patalano, 2010) and seven for doubles (S. Patalano, 2010).  Faulk held the previous record for triples with three last season.

Though the win total wasn't as high as many would have hoped this season, the Cardinals are hoping things will turn around soon.  Many of their top players still have at least another year left.  However, York will miss seniors Danielle Dunn, Faulk, Evelyn Florentino and Belizario, who have now played their final game at York.
