BOX SCORE 1 |
BOX SCORE 2 BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York College softball team honored their four seniors on Wednesday but could not reward them with a victory in their final home games, as St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) defeated the Cardinals, 11-0 and 12-9 in a twinbill at Padavan-Preller Field.
Game one was a sloppy one for the Cardinals, as they committed seven errors, which resulted in an additional seven runs for the Lady Bears.
After a scoreless first, things went south quickly for York. A York error to start the inning eventually led to a two-run single by Brianna Robles, giving St. Joe's a 2-0 lead. The third inning featured the biggest miscue of the game. With two outs and two runners on for St. Joseph's, York dropped a deep fly ball that would have ended the ending. However, three runs came in on the play to make it 5-0.
Then in the fourth, St. Joseph's plated four runs, with the big knock coming from Samantha Rossi, who blasted a mammoth three-run homer to make it 8-0 and put the game well out of reach.
That would be more than enough for Lady Bears pitcher Jackie Perillo, who tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits to earn the victory.
Game two was a much more competitive and exciting contest. At first it didn't look that way though, as St. Joseph's got out to an 8-1 lead after the top of the second. They collected eight hits in the top of the second inning, scoring seven runs and forcing York pitcher
Priscilla Lallave out of the game early.
York would get back in the game in the bottom half of the inning by putting up a three-spot. A sacrifice fly by
Michelle Deleon brought home the first run. An RBI-double by
Karen Werner and then a run-scoring single by
Chyla Guevara brought home the other two.
St. Joseph's looked to have the game in control once again, after adding two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 12-5 lead. But the Cardinals once again rallied and made things interesting.
With the sun setting in the bottom of the fifth, York would score four runs and brought the tying run to the plate against Perillo, who entered the game that inning in relief of starting pitcher Jamilyn McGowan.
Danielle Dunn singled and Lallave walked to start the inning and then
Angelika Ruggiano singled home the first run. After a strikeout, Deleon followed with a two-run double to make it 12-8. St. Joseph's got the second out and then Guevara knocked in a run with a single up the middle.
Geneva Faulk then earned a walk, which brought
Thessaly Belizario to the plate representing the tying run. But Perillo got Belizario to ground out to end the inning.
Unfortunately for York, the Cardinals would not get two more cracks at tying the game, because the game was called due to darkness after that inning. With five innings played, it was enough to be declared an official game.
In the loss, York was led by Deleon (2-for-3, 3 RBIs) and Werner (2-for-4, 2B, 3B), while St. Joseph's was led by Samantha Simon, who was 3-for4- with 3 RBIs. York drops to 5-15, while the Lady Bears improve to 6-10. Werner also added a stolen base to push her total to 11, which ranks second in the CUNYAC.
In between games, seniors Dunn, Belizario, Faulk and
Evelyn Florentino were honored for their contributions to the softball program over the years. With 16 of their first 20 games of the season at home, York will now close out the season with eight games on the road. The Cardinals will begin that road trip on Monday with a doubleheader against Lehman College at 4:30 p.m.
