BOX SCORE BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York Cardinals Softball team came up short against CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival John Jay College yesterday; losing by a final score of 10-0.
The game was a rematch of an April 9th matchup that saw a furious Cardinal's comeback fall just short- as they fell 11-9 at home. Yesterday's matchup lacked those same comeback efforts for the Cardinals and was played on York's home field- but due to a scheduling issue John Jay enacted as the home team. They took to the field first and this enabled starting pitcher Sara McKenna to get started on what proved to be a masterful afternoon for her and the rest of the Bloodhounds.
She gave up only two hits on the afternoon in her complete game shutout to improve her record to 6-8 on the year. One of those hits surrendered came off the bat of first-year left fielder
Angelika Ruggiano. Thessaly Bellizario recorded the Cardinal's lone steal of the afternoon, while first baseman
Danielle Dunn reached base during both of her plate appearances and had the Cardinals' other hit on the day, ripping a single in the top of the fourth inning.
In this game, York was unable to avoid the big innings by opposing teams that have doomed them all season long. Going into the bottom of the third, they faced just a 1-0 deficit; by the top of the fifth the deficit had grown by nine. John Jay plated four runs in the bottom of the third and five in the bottom of the fourth.
In the third, four of the Bloodhounds first five batters scored- while the fourth saw five of the first six reach home. John Jay center fielder Danielle Minaya broke the game open in the third with her two-RBI single. She and third baseman Marlin Rallas had a team-high three runs batted in on the afternoon. Jennifer Pace and Jamie Lam also drove in a run and stole a base for John Jay.
While the loss dropped York to 5-13 on the season (1-7 CUNYAC); it also brought an end to the six-game hitting streaks of first year sensation
Chyla Guevara and senior catcher
Geneva Faulk.
On the season, Faulk ranks third in the conference in slugging percentage (.563), ninth in on base percentage (.446) and first in triples (3). Guevara is tied for fourth in the conference with eight steals. Center fielder
Karen Werner is tied for second in the conference with 10 steals to her name.
Up next for the Cardinals is a doubleheader against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The home game also marks senior day to honor the team's four seniors-Dunn, Faulk, Beliizario and
Evelyn Florentino. The Bloodhounds of John Jay (7-14, 4-6 CUNYAC) played those same Bears of St. Joseph's immediately following their game against York, and lost by a final score of 11-2.
