BOX SCORE 2 BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The York College softball team was able to get an early edge in both games of Saturday's road doubleheader against Brooklyn College. However, they would eventually end up losing both games on the afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 16-2 respectively.
Coming off of an impressive win against the College of New Rochelle on Thursday- York picked up where they left off; taking a 1-0 lead in the top half of the 2nd inning in game number one, after a
Danielle Dunn single brought home
Geneva Faulk.
York maintained their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Brooklyn pinch runner Nathalie DeJesus came around to score on third-baseman Kristina Bermudez's RBI to tie the game.
Game one remained close until the Bulldog's explosion of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. While pitcher
Priscilla Lallave did pitch the complete game for the Cardinal's- Brooklyn College's pitcher Amanda Bisz outpitched her (6 innings pitched, 2 hits, 1 earned run, 10 strikeouts).
Furthermore, Bisz's two-run single in the aforementioned bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the hit that broke the game open. With the win on the mound, Bisz improved to 3-1 on the season.
A critical barrage of runs in one inning once again doomed York in game number two; however it came four innings earlier in the bottom of the first inning. Standout newcomer
Chyla Guevara drove in a run in the top half of the first to give York a 1-0 lead, but that advantage would be short-lived.
The bottom of the first in the game saw the Bulldog's put up nine runs on seven hits. Several Brooklyn College players drove in runs in the inning- including Samantha Rodriguez, Maria Mantagas, Nicole Tufano and Kayla Hill. A big error early in the inning helped the Bulldogs put up a crooked number. Of the nine runs allowed, only one turned out to be earned.
Brooklyn College went on to put up runs in the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd inning- they were blanked in the fourth, but after shutting York down in the top half of the fifth, the game was called via the mercy rule at the conclusion of the half inning.
The game saw York continue their strong season on the base paths, however.
Karen Werner picked up her 9th and 10th steals during the game- tying her for the most in the CUNY Athletic Conference. Guevara stole her 8th, which puts her in a tie with Faulk for the conference's 2nd-best mark.
Hill improved to 8-3 on the season after picking up the victory in the concluding game of the doubleheader. She also drove in four runs. Lallave, behind shaky defense, took her 2nd loss of the afternoon, while
Michelle Deleon closed out the remainder of the game, giving up only one earned run in 3.1 innings of work.
With the two losses- York falls to 5-12 on the year with a 1-6 mark in CUNYAC play. Brooklyn College continued their solid season, improving their record to 17-9, with a 6-2 mark within the conference. York will take on John Jay in a home game on Monday at 3:30 pm, while Brooklyn College will look to stay hot in a doubleheader on the road against CUNYAC foe Hunter College on Wednesday.
