JAMAICA, N.Y.- This past Friday and Saturday saw the York College Gymnasium host the Men's Volleyball Classic for the 10th straight year. Seven teams including the Cardinals competed in a tournament that saw each team play four games. As a team, York went just 1-3 but senior
Leszek Stankiewicz surpassed 1,000 career kills with his effort this weekend.
Stankiewicz surpassed the mark on Saturday in the first match against Lasell. After the weekend ended, his total stood at 1,0008 and for his four-year, York career.
The Cardinals won their first match to Lancaster Bible College 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20).
Paramivir Singh led the Cardinals with 11 digs, while
Leszek Stankiewicz and
Edner Geffrard chipped in 13 kills apiece. Alex Bahn's 15 kills led all players.
They then dropped their next three matches. Their first loss of the tournaument came to the eventual champion Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20).
Bryan Williams had ten kills in the loss.
Their next match came against the runner-up Lasell College where they lost in a thrilling five-set showdown 3-2 (18-25, 19-25, 25-11, 25-23, 11-15). Last weeks' CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week
Randy Adams' 39 assists led the way and were second most amongst all players in the match. Geffrard had 11 kills to lead the team and
Maximo Bonilla chipped in ten of his own.
York's final match was against Marymount University- they were swept 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20). Tournament All-Star Thomas Avinash led the way with seven digs to go along with nine kills and a pair of blocks while Geffrard chipped in two blocks of his own. Bryce Ernsberger's 11 digs for Marymount led all players.
EMU was named tournament champions after not only going 4-0, but also sweeping sets in three out of their four matches. They were led by tournament MVP Quentin Moore and Matt Dolan, who had 31 assists in their matchup with the host Cardinals. Lasell also went 4-0, however based off of tournament format was named the runner-up after going five sets in their 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 27-29, 25-22, 15-10) win against NJCU, prior to their five set win over York.
An "All-Tournament Team" was also named at the conclusion of match play- aside from Thomas earning a spot to represent the Cardinals, the team consisted of Bahn (Lancaster Bible), Ernberger (Marymount), Rishi Sarkar (NYU-Poly) and Sheldon Coure (NJCU).
The Cardinals (13-8, 5-2 CUNYAC) return to action on March 13th when they visit Brooklyn College (9-9, 5-2 CUNYAC) for a conference showdown. They will look to earn their second and final regular season win against the Bulldogs, a team they beat in three close sets 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-19) back on February 8th.
In that meeting,
Bryan Williams led the way for York with nine kills and a pair of digs. Timothy Hill had a solid all-around game for Brooklyn College, notching 18 assists, four digs, five kills, two service aces and a block.
