Softball Drops Doubleheader to Old Westbury

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York College softball team dropped a doubleheader to the College at Old Westbury on Friday afternoon, losing game one, 11-2 and game two, 10-3.

Game one was much closer than the score would indicate as the two teams were knotted up at 2-2 heading into the top of the sixth.

York took the early lead in the bottom of the second after Priscilla Lallave lined a single through the left side to bring home Geneva Faulk.  Old Westbury would push two across in the top half of the fourth, though, to gain the lead.  After putting runners on second and third, the Panthers got on the board with an RBI groundout by Jennifer Jean.  With two outs, a throwing error on York brought home another run, to give Old Westbury a 2-1 advantage.

York responded in the bottom half of the inning when they successfully executed a double steal.  Geneva Faulk stoke second and Danielle Dunn stole home to make it 2-2.

But things went south for York in the top of the sixth as Old Westbury plated nine runs in the frame—thanks in large part to the poor defense of the Cardinals in the inning.  Four errors occurred during the inning. The biggest came with Old Westbury up 6-2.  A groundball to third was thrown wildly to first, and on the same play, another throwing error was made.  Instead of the inning being over, five more runs would eventually score, putting the game well out of reach.

Lallave pitched better for York than the score would indicate, as she was mostly a victim of poor defense behind her.  Only three of the 11 runs were earned.

Old Westbury's Nicole DeCola earned the win, allowing one earned run over six innings, while striking out six.  Jean led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs.

Game two was out of reach early for the Cardinals.  Old Westbury plated two in the first, three in the second and four in the third.  The game was called after five innings due to darkness.

York's offensive output came in the third inning, where they scored all three of their runs. York got an RBI groundout from Danielle Dunn and a run-scoring single from Thessaly Belizario before an Old Westbury error gave the Cardinals another run.

DeCola once again earned the win for the Panthers, with Corrine Protasiewicz going 4-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Old Westbury on offense.

York falls to 1-4, while Old Westbury improves to 3-4.  The Cardinals will host the College of Mount Satin Vincent on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Padavan Preller Field.
