First-Inning Struggles Lead to Doubleheader Loss to St. Elizabeth

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York College softball team had a bad first inning in each game of a doubleheader against the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday and could never recover.  York lost game one, 8-3, after surrendering five runs in the first inning and lost game two, 14-1, after giving up four runs in the opening frame.

The Eagles pounded out five hits in the first inning of game one to take a commanding, 5-0 lead.  A RBI sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch, two RBI singles and a passed ball resulted in the five-run first.

From there, the two teams were even.  St. Elizabeth scratched out a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  York pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make things interesting.

York loaded the bases and then Michelle DeLeon worked a walk to put the Cardinals on the board. Chyla Guevara followed with a run-scoring single, but on the play, Karen Werner was thrown out at home trying to score from second.  That would prove to be a crucial play as that curtailed the rally.  York scored another run after a St. Elizabeth error but they could not get any closer.

Danesha Triplett earned the win for the Eagles, tossing seven innings, while allowing four hits and two earned runs, despite not striking out a batter.  Christina Scolara led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Game two wasn't much of a contest as St. Elizabeth got to York pitcher Thessaly Belizario early.  The Eagles put up a four-spot in the opening frame and then added six more in the second to put the game well out of reach.

The Cardinals managed just one hit in the five-inning game, which came off the bat of Deleon.  Geneva Faulk got York on the board in the fourth with an RBI groundout.

Scolaro earned the win on the mound, going five innings, while striking out eight with just one hit allowed.

York drops to 1-2, while St. Elizabeth improves to 2-2.  The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday with a road doubleheader at Mt. St. Mary beginning at 3:30 p.m.
