Men’s Volleyball Comes Up Short Against #9 Elmira

BOX SCORE
UNION, N.J. – Despite nine kills and a .615 hitting percentage from senior Leszek Stankiewicz, the Cardinals fell to #9 Elmira College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-23) on day one of the Kean University Tournament, Friday night.

York kept it close with Elmira, but the ninth-ranked team in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) poll proved to be too much in the end.

The Cardinals went back and forth in the opening set until Elmira pulled away with four straight points to take the early lead.  The second set was dominated by Elmira with the service game being the biggest factor.  The Soaring Eagles had fives aces in the set alone, while York had five service errors.  Those ten points would be the difference in the set.  The final set saw York take an early 5-1 lead, but Elmira slowly chipped away and pulled ahead late to clinch the match.

Stankiewicz's effort on the night was an impressive one but not uncommon for the Poland native.  He's hit over .600 on five different occasions this year and has a .340 percentage on the year—which ranks third in the CUNYAC.  However, Stankiewicz's performance was outdone by Elmira's Tyler Smith, who had a match-high 14 kills, while hitting .542.

Also contributing for York was Avinash Thomas, who finished with 27 assists and six digs, as well as Bryan Williams, who recorded ten kills.  Edner Geffrard added three kills and seven digs.

York drops to 15-13, while Elmira improves to 17-6.  The Cardinals will close out the Kean Tournament tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. contest against #15 Stevenson University and a 2:00 p.m. match vs. host Kean.  Live stats are available for both games and video is available for the Kean game.
