Six-Run Fourth, Four Guevara Steals Propel Cardinals to Win in Season Opener

York Wins Season Opener

BOX SCORE
BELLEROSE, N.Y.- The York Cardinals softball team kicked off their 2014 season with a 13-5 home win yesterday versus Yeshiva University. A six-run fourth inning and four stolen bases by third baseman Chyla Guevara helped propel York to the win.

The Cardinals as a team stole 11 bases- with Guevara's four being the most by a player since Karen Werner matched that total on March 21st, 2013 against the College of New Rochelle.

The Maccabees of Yeshiva got off to an early lead in their school's first- ever sanctioned NCAA Division III softball game with an inside the park two-run homer by pitcher Erin Potasnick in the top of the first inning. She went 2-3 with four RBIs and a run scored on the day. Her homer marked Yeshiva's last lead of the afternoon.

Potasnick's success did not translate on the mound. She issued nine walks, one to first-year player Angelika Ruggiano in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead; this proved to be the game winner- dropping Potasnick and consequently Yeshiva to 0-1 on the young season. Michelle Deleon (pictured above) and Conetia Anderson also drove in runs in a four run bottom of the first.

York broke the 6-5 contest open in the bottom of the fourth inning with a 2 RBI double by Geneva Faulk. Eliana Moronta also entered the game and drove in a run.

In the same inning, catcher Destiny Roman ripped a single that scored Danielle Dunn. She and Faulk had a team-high three runs scored a piece. A Maccabee miscue also led to an additional York run scoring. In the following inning Roman would drive in the run that ended the game on an eight-run mercy rule.

Deleon pitched well in her two innings of work- striking out five versus just one hit allowed to earn her first win of the season. She went 0-1 at the plate with a team-high three walks and the aforementioned RBI on the afternoon.

The 1-0 Cardinals will face off against Mount Saint Vincent in a home doubleheader tomorrow starting at 3:30pm. They dropped both games of the previous doubleheader between the two clubs in the 2012 season 9-0 and 10-2 respectively.
