The opening set was as close as it could get. With the score tied at 13-13, the two teams exchanged points up until 22-22. York finally broke the trend with three straight points to win the first set. Kills by
Avinash Thomas and Andre gave them set point. A back row violation on Lehman clinched the set for the Cardinals.
The second set saw York pull away midway throughout. With the Cardinals leading 11-9, York went on an 8-3 stretch to take a 19-12 advantage. They would cruise from there to take a 2-0 set lead.
Lehman picked it up in the third and hit .379—their best total of the match—to force a fourth set. The Lightning led for most of the way and then held off a late York rally to get the win.
The fourth set was another tight affair until late, when York took a 16-14 lead and extended the advantage to 21-14 with five unanswered points. York benefitted from three Lehman hitting errors and one service error during the stretch. On match point, Andre put the match away with a kill.
Also contributing for York was Thomas, who finished with 37 assists and three kills and
Bryan Williams, who had eight kills and five digs.
Edner Geffrard added seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage (7-0-14) in just two sets of action.
The Lighting (8-13, 3-7 CUNYAC) saw impressive performances from a pair of athletes go to waste. Jaleel Lino—the CUNYAC leader in kills per set—finished with a match-high 22 kills and Miguel Gallardo added 18 kills and 11 digs.
