PROVIDENCE, R.I.-  This past Friday and Saturday marked the second straight weekend the York College Men's Volleyball team competed in tournament play . Unfortunately for the Cardinals- they failed to notch a victory in their four matches- dropping their record on the season to 14-12.

Despite being outplayed for the weekend- standout Edner Geffrard continued his strong play of late and was named a member of the All-Tournament team (the same honor that teammate Avinash Thomas secured a week ago at the York Men's Volleyball Classic).

The round-robin style competition saw York fall to the eventual tournament champion and number five team in the country MIT in their first match, by a score of 3-0 (25-0, 25-22, 25-11).  Brendan Chang led all players with 11 digs for the Engineers, while Geffrard chipped in five digs of his own to go along with six kills.

More of the same struggles faced the Cardinals the rest of the way; they dropped their next match to the host team Johnson and Wales, who went 2-2 for the event- their first win of the tournament came in this match by the score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22). The match saw 34 ties and 17 lead changes- but it was the hosting Wildcats that came up on top thanks to strong play by Shawn Kennedy (16 kills, 4 service aces). Standouts Leszek Stankiewicz (9 kills, 8 blocks) and Thomas (30 assists, 4 digs, 3 kills) played well for the Cardinals in the loss.

York started the second day in similar fashion- falling to Wentworth 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17). In the match, Wentworth's star of the weekend Sam Pisker had eight kills and three blocks, while Bryan Williams also contributed eight kills for York in the losing effort.

The Cardinals' final disappointment came in their final match against an 8-18 Vassar club that tied for 2nd place on the weekend, thanks to their 2-2 record.  They fell 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20) and saw Vassars' Joe Pyne record 17 kills on them.  Sebastien Francois led the Cardinals with 13 kills of his own, to go along with a pair of blocks.

Paul Syta of champion MIT was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Johnson and Wales Men's Volleyball Invitational with his Engineers going a perfect 4-0. Other All-Tournament team members included Syta's teammate Brandon Chang, Geffrard, Kennedy (Johnson and Wales), Pyne (Vassar) and Pisker (Wentworth).

After the tough weekend, York will look forward to their return to CUNYAC play with a home match against Lehman College on Tuesday, March 18th
