Geffrard Leads Men’s Volleyball to Five-Set Win over Brooklyn

Cardinals Rally From 2-1 Deficit to Top the Bulldogs

BOX SCORE
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – York College junior Edner Geffrard notched 13 kills, seven blocks and a career-high 21 digs, while also recording the match-clinching kill, to lead the Cardinals to a thrilling, 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13) triumph over conference-foe Brooklyn College on Thursday evening.

York needed just about every contribution from Geffrard on the evening as they pulled out the win by the slimmest of margins.  The seven blocks were a season-high for Geffrard and the 21 digs were the most by any Cardinal this season.

Also putting up big numbers for York was senior Bryan Williams, who had 15 kills, 11 digs and two blocks and sophomore setter Avinash Thomas, who had nine kills, 18 assists, seven digs and three blocks.  Senior Leszek Stankiewicz finished with six kills, seven digs and six blocks.

York was dominated by Brooklyn in the first set and was up against set point in the second—faced with the prospect of a 2-0 deficit.  But with the score 24-23, York got consecutive kills by Stankiewicz and Geffrard to take a one-point lead.  After a kill by David Dimitruk evened up the score at 25-25, a Williams kill gave York set point.  A Brooklyn attack error then gave York the set.

In the third set, Brooklyn scored the first four points and York could never recover.  York battled to tie the score at 13-13, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead again with five straight points and never looked back.

The Cardinals once again found themselves in a hole in the fourth set, trailing 13-8 after a service ace by Timothy Hui.  But York slowly chipped into the lead and tied the score at 19-19. The Bulldogs then stumbled down the stretch, committing five errors before Williams finished off the set with a kill.

York finally got off to a good start in the fifth set, jumping out in front, 8-3, thanks once again to a number of Brooklyn miscues.  The Cardinals would eventually get three match points, after another Williams kill made the score 14-11.  The Bulldogs fought off two straight points but the Cardinals put the match away with a kill from Geffrard.

For Brooklyn, Dimitruk led the way with 16 kills and nine digs.  Reigning CUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week winner Mikhail Osipov finished with 14 kills and 18 digs.

With the win, York improves to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in the CUNYAC, while Brooklyn drops to 9-10 and 5-4 in the CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround, as they will travel to Providence, R.I. for the two-day Johnson and Wales University Tournament tomorrow.  York faces Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. on Friday and Johnson and Wales at 8 p.m.
