JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team led by as many as 11 points in the second half of play, Wednesday night, but St. Joseph's College rallied late and defeated the Cardinals, 57-50, in a non-conference contest.
York looked strong for most of the game. After falling behind by nine points early (17-8), the Cardinals rallied to tie the game at 19-19 with 4:13 remaining in the half.
Angelika Ruggiano connected on a three-pointer and
Shauncia McClendon made a pair of buckets to help spark the 11-2 run. After the two teams exchanged baskets, York closed the half scoring the final six points to go into the locker room up by the score of 27-21.
The Cardinals continued their strong play coming out of the locker room and extended its lead to 11 points (41-30) at the 13:57 mark. But from that point on, St. Joseph's picked up its play, scoring nine unanswered to close within two points with 10:14 left. Kelly McNamee was the catalyst for the Bears, as she scored five points during the stretch.
From there, the two teams went back and forth until St. Joseph's pulled ahead for the first time since the first half. A 7-0 run capped off by a Megan Moran jumper but the Bears up 52-46 with just 3:54 to play. York could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
In the loss,
Nia Rene and Stayce Kay Miurhead each had a pair of strong efforts. Rene registered a double-double, scoring ten points and grabbing ten boards, while Muirhead also had a double-double (10 pts, 11 rbs), while also adding two blocks and four steals. McClendon finished with 12 point and Ruggiano had nine.
St. Joseph's was led by Moran and McNamee, who each netted 17 points each. The Bears improve to 13-8 with the victory.
York (2-19) will visit Medgar Evers College on Friday at 6 p.m.
