BOX SCORE
NEW YORK, N.Y.- The York College Women's Basketball team struggled yesterday against CCNY; as they took the loss in Harlem by a score of 70-32. The loss marked the Cardinal's 18th of the year and 11th in CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play. Those go against two total wins and one coming from conference play. The meeting marked the second and final of the year for the two clubs.
In their first matchup on January the 7th in Queens, the Cardinals had a dominating performance in the first half but ended up squandering the lead late in the game to fall by a score of 52-51. Yesterday's game did not live up to that excitement as the York ladies did not hold a lead past the 14:44 mark of the first half. No starters broke double figures; but junior center
Stayce Kay Muirhead had a strong performance netting seven points and 10 rebounds (six offensive.) Mulrhead also contributed an assist and a pair of steals in the losing effort.
One of the area's York outshined the Beavers was bench scoring. Other notable efforts for the Cardinals included
Danielle Dunn's team-high 12 points and a well-rounded performance by senior
Aimee Aikens, who had four points to go along with three boards and an assist. The snowy commute however may have taken its toll on the team; as they were out worked and outscored by CCNY. More notably however for the Cardinals was their performance at the free-throw line shooting only 19% (4-21.) The season-low percentage was outdone by their respective overall shooting from the field at 22%.
For the Beavers the story was inside. They exploited the Cardinals down low as they won the rebound battle, 55-39; to go along with 28 points in the paint and 18 off second chances. Only eight players saw action for the Beavers, however all saw respectable minutes. Bria Fisher had the game's only double-double performance (14 points, 12 rebounds) and was almost joined by teammate Karissa Core, who fell one rebound short (23, 9.) Latoya Lee also contributed 15 points in the victory.
Up next for CCNY (8-12/ 5-8 CUNYAC) is a road battle with Yeshiva University on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, York College will return home to take on St. Joseph's College at 5:30pm. All York students are encouraged to attend and wear pink, as the school will be honoring breast cancer awareness at the game. The game will also play host to a guest speaker from the American Cancer Society and admission for all students will be free. Both York and CCNY's next games will take place baring extreme weather conditions in the greater New York area.
